2022-07-29

In a recent report released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, pickup trucks accounted for 14% of all vehicles reported stolen in America in 2021.

For the second year in a row, Chevrolet and Ford full-size pick-ups topped the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) annual Hot Wheels vehicle theft report, and GMC full-size pickups placed in the top 10. Nearly 1 million vehicles were reported stolen in 2021, with 14% of them being full-size pickups made by Chevrolet, Ford, and GMC.

“Crime is a business, and business is good.”

The NICB’s president and CEO, David Glawe, reported that used car values were at historical highs. There has been a significant increase in the value of used cars over the past two years due to supply chain issues and inflation. Stolen cars can be shipped overseas and resold or broken down for valuable parts.

In comparison to 2020, there was an 8% increase in passenger vehicle thefts in 2021.

1. Chevrolet Full-Size Pickup Chevrolet Silverado

Number of thefts: 48.206.  Model most stolen: 2004.  Model base price: $19,545.

The 2004 Chevrolet Silverado is both the second most stolen pickup and the second most stolen car in America in 2021, with 40,968 units stolen. With an expansive interior space, stellar performance and great overall value, it’s no wonder this pickup is a favorite for many consumers and thieves alike.

2. Ford Full-Size Pickup  Ford F-150

Number of thefts: 47,999.  Model most stolen: 2006.  Model base price: $18,930.

Top of the most stolen car list in America for 2021 is the 2006 Ford F-150. Over 47,999 pickups were stolen in 2021, the third consecutive year the pickup topped the list. Obviously, pickup trucks are popular among thieves due to their power, reliability, and versatility. In particular, the F-150 may be the most popular option given its great hauling capacity, spacious interior, and powerful engine.

3. Honda Civic

Number of thefts: 31,673.  Model most stolen: 2000.  Model base price: $10,750.

Among America’s stolen cars and trucks in 2020, the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado ranks second with 31,673units. Thanks to its spacious interior, great performance and affordable price, it’s no wonder this pickup is very popular with consumers and thieves.

4. Honda Accord

Number of thefts: 30,274.  Model most stolen: 1997.  Model base price: $15,100.

With its high resale value and parts reliability, the Honda Accord is a popular model across the United States. In spite of this, security is limited due to the age of the model. There were 30,274 models stolen in 2021 alone. Current 1997 Honda Accord owners might want to upgrade their security because a slim jim is all a thief may need.

5. Toyota Camry

Number of thefts: 17,270.  Model most stolen: 2019.  Model base price: $24,095.

Known for its reliability and great resale value, the Toyota Camry is a popular mid-size sedan. This may explain why thieves are so attracted to it. A hybrid version and fuel-efficient engines make the 2019 model appealing to eco-conscious drivers. It is possible that these features are the reason why 17,270 units were stolen in 2020.

6. GMC Full-Size Pickup

Number of thefts: 15,599.  Model most stolen: 2005.  Model base price: $18,190.

There were 15,599 GMC Sierra pickups stolen in 2020, making it another truck on the list. At its price point, this quiet pickup truck offers front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options. It is likely that GMC pickup truck owners should invest in alarm systems as older models lack the necessary technology to help prevent theft. As the third most stolen pickup truck in the country and the seventh most stolen vehicle, it is likely that GMC full-size pickup owners should invest in alarm systems.

7. Nissan Altima

Number of thefts: 14,108.  Model most stolen: 2020.  Model base price: $24,300.

It is one of the few mid-sized sedans with front-and all-wheel drive, the Nissan Altima. Modern models like this are attractive to thieves because of their sleek exteriors and numerous technological features. It was reported that 14,108 units were stolen in 2021. Even though it has several safety features, its keyless ignition can cause owners to lose sight of their key fobs and leave them in the car, which can cause theft.

Vehicle Thefts and How to Prevent Them

Any vehicle can end up being stolen, no matter what type it is. The reason for this is that as criminal elements become more sophisticated, they are hotwiring some of the most secure models available.

To protect your vehicle from theft, you can take the following steps:

1, Track your vehicle at all times by installing a tracking system.

2, If your vehicle does not have an immobilizer system, you might want to consider getting one installed.

3, Make sure you have an anti-theft device and an audible alarm installed on your vehicle so that you will be  notified if anyone attempts to break in.

4, It is important to park your car in well-lit areas in order to prevent it from getting stolen.

5, It may surprise you to learn how many people leave their car windows open by mistake, making it easy for criminals to make their job easier. So always make sure you close your car windows to keep your vehicle safe from criminals.

6, The spare key should never be left near your vehicle at any time.

7, Even if you are just running into a nearby grocery store to pick up some milk, make sure that you keep your keys out of your vehicle at all times.

8, Check always to make sure that the doors of your car are securely locked before you leave the house.

Keeping this in mind, you do not want to make it easier for criminals to get away with their crimes.

Incorporating solutions

In such situations, JimiIoT vehicle GPS trackers can provide good solutions. In addition to obtaining vehicle data such as VIN codes, fault codes, vehicle speeds, engine speeds, etc., JimiIoT vehicle GPS trackers are the new generation of smart car OBD boxes. The positioning trajectory will be maintained even when the satellite signal is lost. By combining the UBI algorithm with the UBI driving behavior algorithm, it can analyze the driver’s driving behavior such as acceleration, deceleration, and lane changes completely, so that the vehicle can be monitored without blind spots and managed in real-time. Compared to other similar products on the market, the device has a faster and more stable 4G cat.1 network.
